Tax Credits For Whole Foods?

Posted by Picasa

If our candidates, Senators Clinton, Obama and McCain wanted to make an impact on health-care system, our available cash and our health, how about a tax credit for consumers who purchase vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean meats and fish.

The tax credit would help small farms, ranches and fisher businesses.

Four Facts In America:

1. We give farm subsidies to large domestic and foreign agricultural corporations.
2. Americans would be healthier if they ate more vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean meat, fish.
3. Our health care system does not work for the middle class and is almost non-existent for the poor.
4. Healthy eating habits would change our health for the better and reduce the stress on our health care system.
5. The cost of healthy food is at an all time high.

Many people have chronic health issues and need medical intervention, but enabling people to eat healthy food, empowers people to help themselves. A tax credit for vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean meats would mean a healthier diet and population.

Good Old Competition Can Help Consumers At The Pump

Exxon Mobil reported profits of almost $11 billion for its first quarter for 2008 -- a 17% increase over the previous year. We Americans have and are reducing our purchases and use of fossil fuel.

Strange the spike in cost per barrel has not affected the profits of the big oil producers.

We buy the fuel that allows Exxon Mobil to make record profits. So why not buy from a competitor for the next month (while off the island.) Lets organize who we purchase our gasoline and petroleum products from. Economics as they currently work would create a price war between oil companies. It would create a price war between gasoline stations on island whose owners are also doing very well.

On Nantucket people pay upwards of $4.56 per gallon of gas. It is called competition. Lets continue to cut back on our use of fossil fuel and make a conscious choice to buy gas from competitors of Exxon Mobil for the next month while off island.

On island, lets use alternatives as best we can and boycott the gas station. Don't fill your tank with gas. Buy half as much as you would normally purchase and stop the glut. As consumers we have power.
